Whether I’m stripping it down for a fast paced handheld run and gun shoot, locking it into a stabilized gimbal setup, or building it out into a full scale documentary cine rig, adaptability is everything.
In this post, I’m breaking down my entire sony fx30 rig across three distinct shooting styles to show you exactly how I maximize this compact powerhouse.
I’ll dive into how I plan each setup, my step by step assembly process, and the key components you need to build a highly functional, minimal rig that works for you without adding unnecessary bulk to your pack.

Run & gun handheld setup

When I need to move fast and keep a low profile on the ground, this exact combination of my Sony FX30, Atomos Shinobi II, and SmallRig armor is my go to solo setup. The form fitting SmallRig cage wraps securely around my FX30, giving me rugged protection and the exact mounting points I need without adding unnecessary bulk to my gear bag.
Paired with a quick release SmallRig top handle, I get an instant, rock solid grip for low angle tracking shots and stable, handheld three point contact that completely eliminates micro jitters when I’m moving.
The real game changer for my shooting style is mounting the Atomos Shinobi II directly up top. Because the Shinobi II features seamless USB C camera control, I can adjust my FX30’s internal settings and trigger recording right from the bright, daylight viewable screen while letting the camera’s flawless autofocus handle the tracking.
It keeps my footprint incredibly lean, lightweight, and efficient allowing me to pull the entire built out rig straight from my pack and trust that my shots are locked in and sharp the second I hit record.
Gimbal setup

When I need buttery smooth tracking shots without any lag or setup friction, I strip the FX30 down completely and run it bare without a cage. Dropping the naked camera body straight onto the DJI RS4 Mini keeps the payload incredibly light, allowing the motors to perform at their absolute best.
Because I don’t use an external monitor on this build, I rely entirely on the FX30’s flip out screen to judge my framing.
This keeps the camera’s center of gravity perfectly centered and completely clear of the gimbal arms, meaning I can tilt, pan, and roll through full cinematic movements without hitting a single obstruction.
The absolute secret weapon for my shooting style here is the DJI tracking module. By pairing the RS4 Mini with the intelligent tracker, the gimbal automatically locks onto my subject and handles the physical camera framing, while the FX30’s rock solid internal autofocus ensures everything stays pin sharp.
It creates a flawless, automated tracking system that lets me focus entirely on my environment and my footing. This ultra lean setup is built for speed allowing me to balance in seconds, move effortlessly through tight spaces, and capture fluid, cinematic motion without fighting extra weight.
Full production cine rig build

When I need to transition into full documentary mode for all day endurance and absolute image control, I scale the camera up into a complete cinema build. The backbone of this setup is the CineBack module bolted onto the rear of my FX30.
It completely transforms the ergonomics, giving me the boxy form factor of a traditional cinema camera while acting as the central hub for my V mount battery. Running a V mount setup means I can power the camera and all my accessories for a full day of shooting without ever swapping internal batteries, giving me total peace of mind when the cameras need to roll indefinitely.
To handle unpredictable outdoor lighting and capture clean audio on the fly, I lock down the front and top of the rig. I mount the Tilta VND matte box directly to the front of my lens, allowing me to instantly dial in my exposure and maintain my exact shallow depth of field when stepping from harsh sunlight into deep shade without messing with a heavy rod system.
Up top, my Rode mic is permanently mounted to handle directional audio or quick ambient soundscapes. This build gives me the ultimate, self contained documentary powerhouse perfectly balanced, packed with power, and ready for long form storytelling in any environment.
I have published a separate article with list of all the gears used on my rig. Also, check my insta to see some rig building reels.
